Wooden statues wear sombreros in front of the former Dawg House, a tip-off to the new Mexican eatery inside.
“I heeded the call of a good potential for investment in a new restaurant here, thanks to the incentives of the City of Pompano Beach in their quest to turn it into a vibrant city,” says owner Miguel Elizalde, who once owned a restaurant in Washington state.
Elizalde hails from Guadalajara, where spice and mole sauce reign, which influence his enchiladas ($12.25), tacos ($11.95), burritos ($10.50-$11.75) and fajitas ($13.95). Taquitos rancheros ($10.95), Carne asada y mas cooked over charcoal ($14.50), Expresso burrito with parmesan and enchilada sauce ($10.75), Burrito amigo with chile verde pork ($10.75) and chile relleno wrapped in a thin egg omelet ($5.95) stem from family recipes.
Elizalde grills jalapenos and tomatoes for his salsas and guacamole, which is prepared tableside ($7.49-$9.49). Perhaps pair with oversize margaritas ($7.75-$10.75).
Lunch and dinner are served daily amid décor from Guadalajara — wooden furniture, metal lanterns and colorful, funky lighting. Music from Mexican guitarists is in the works for weekends.
